Welcome to our book club questions for The School For Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan

  1. This story is full of unsavoury characters. Who did you dislike the most and why?
  2. Why do you think Frida left Harriet alone?
  3. “I’m not going to pretend I’m the perfect mother, but parents make mistakes”. Do you think the officers were right to take Frida’s baby away?
  4. “Handsome men can’t be trusted.” Do you agree with this statement Frida believed her aunts and uncles would make when they discovered her fate?
  5. How much do you think the parents learnt with the dolls related to real life?
  6. In the right circumstances, how effective could such a school for mothers – and fathers – be for parents?
  7. Given the advice from The School for Good Mothers, is there anything you would add / change about your parenting skills?
  8.  We discover that Frida was bullied as a child, and she doesn’t remember her mother denouncing the bullies. How do you think this impacted her as a parent?
  9. “Loneliness is a form of narcissism. A mother who is in harmony with her child, who understands her place in her child’s life and her role in society, is never lonely. Through caring for her child, all her needs are fulfilled.” Do you believe women are expected to behave a certain way once they become mothers?
  10. Frida’s counsellor thought she was the architect of her own misery. Do you think this is true? If so, what would be your advice to Frida?
  11. Do you believe Frida deserved to get Harriet back? Do you believe Tucker deserved to get his son back?
  12. What did you think of the ending?
