BOOK CLUB QUESTIONS: Keep It In The Family

Welcome to our December 2024 book club questions for Keep It In The Family by John Marrs

  1. A young Debbie said of her parents: “They get away with what they do by hiding in plain sight and by being ordinary. Nobody sees in them what I see because they have no reason to look. Only I notice the hollowness of their eyes.” Even though Debbie knew they were evil, she became part of their criminal world and went on to draw her family into hers. Had Debbie been raised in a different environment, do you think she would have still gone on to commit her heinous crimes?
  2. Have you ever renovated a house or found something mysterious in a new home you’ve moved into? What was your best/worst experience?
  3. Which character, if any, did you most warm to / empathise with the most?
  4. Despite knowing he had a girlfriend, Mia tried to justify winning Finn over by telling herself, “Girl Code only applied if I knew the competition personally.” What did you think of this? Did you like Mia’s character?
  5. What did you think of chapter 39?
  6. Did you guess the twist about Dave / Debbie?
  7. After Debbie took Sonny, what did you think to Finn keeping their son’s fate a secret from Mia?
  8. What was your overall impression of the story? How does it compare with the author’s other thrillers, or if it’s your first time reading his books, would you read another one?
